Doggy Do's and Don’ts: 3 ways to be a green pet owner

Fluffy and Rover don’t know much about climate change, so it’s up to you to take the lead and be a green pet owner. In our opinions, our pets are consumers too and the food and toys you give them impact the environment as much as your own, human-friendly products do. In fact, New Zealand scientist Robert claims that one medium-sized dog causes more environmental damage than an SUV. Therefore, we have come up with three simple steps to green your dog and become a green pet owner.

1. Go veggie: It takes far more resources to raise cattle than plants and most dog foods are especially meat-heavy. While the idea of vegetarian pets may seem controversial, www.webmd.com explains that dogs can often be healthy on meatless diets with careful planning and supplementation. So, just participating in Meatless Tuesdays with your dog or buying peanut butter treats instead of meat, can make a difference.

2. Skip the breeder: You already know that adopting is the most humane way to pick up a puppy. You do, don’t you? Well, it turns out that puppy mills—which often house their animals in filthy conditions—tend to overbreed, placing extra strain on the environment. Head to the adoption shelter to save a pet’s life—it’s just good karma for you!

3. Get Chemical-Free Toys and Accessories: With the wide assortment of green pet toys on the market today, you have no excuse to keep buying the same toxic plastics and chemically-treated blankets and goods. If your local pet shop doesn’t offer these products, look no further than your computer. An online vendor like http://olivegreendog.com/dog-toys/ is there to help.

The challenge is now up to you you to green your dog! So what do you think of these three steps, would you consider implementing some of them in your and your pet his life?
