When a rockstar goes green

When a rockstar goes green…

Sex, drugs and Rock ‘n Roll. Musicians are known for their extravaganza and excesses. However, what stars do to their bodies doesn’t even compare to the toll recording, releasing and performing music do to the environment. One stadium show, for example, produces about 1000 tons of carbon dioxide! Can you image what a world tour of a world star does to nature? Luckily, a some stars are taking green initiatives.

Radiohead is not only one of the most amazing bands of the 21st century, it is also one of the greenest. A few examples of their actions: every tour bus and truck runs on biofuel. They never use cargo airlines to transport their instruments. The band drinks from water flasks, instead of disposable cups which are bad for the environment. The list goes on… Liars, the band who accompanied Radiohead on the 2009 tour, wrote : “In a world full of fear and ripe with insincerity it's such a relief to have met Radiohead. They are purveyors of truth, beauty and a moral responsibility to the planet.”

The Barenakes Ladies (known for their theme song for “The Big Bang Theory” (and many other great songs)) are another example of a green band. When they’re touring, they always ask for organic food and biodegradable supplies. The band’s CDs are sold in 100% recyclable cases.  And a surprising fact: they also collect their broken guitar strings that could become jewelry!

If the bands can do it, you can do it too! Try to be as green as possible at a concert... For example, don't throw your plastics cups on the ground  ;)
